The average period spent in the Home during the year
by each patient was 15-18 days.
Patients can be attended at the Home by their own
Doctors if they wish.
Those who desire it, can be attended in their own home
by a qualified midwife from the Maternity Home. She is
assisted by a probationer nurse. During the year 56 Penge
cases were attended by the visiting Midwives.
I am still getting many applications for admission into
the Joint Maternity Home too late for acceptance, it being
usually necessary for at least six months notice to be given
by applicants. The Authorities are considering the provision
of a new Maternity Home.
Maternal Mortality.
The Assistant County Medical Officer enquires into all
maternal deaths in this area.
Enquiries into cases of Puerperal fever and Puerperal
pyrexia are made by myself and the Health Visitor.
Institutional Provision for Mothers or Children.
Maternity patients whose home conditions are unsuitable
for a confinement, and those suffering from abnormal antenatal
conditions, are admitted into the Penge and Beckenham
Joint Maternity Home.
