The steady and uninterrupted increase in population over the
last decade, has, of course, been accompanied by a similar increase
in housing. The Preliminary Report on the 1961 Census shows that
during these ten years the number of private dwellings in the district
has risen from 18,214 to 25,277, an increase of 38.8 per cent.
It is interesting to reflect on the increased use of such Council
services as refuse collection and disposal, resulting from these substantial
changes.
Birth.
1,308 live births appertaining to the Urban District were registered
during 1961, of which 666 were males and 642 females, and 1,272
legitimate and 36 illegitimate. The crude birth rate for the Urban
District was 16.3 per 1,000 total population.
The rate for England and Wales as a whole was 17.4.
The illegitimate birth rate was 28.0 per 1,000 live and still births.
There were 36 illegitimate live births, of which 15 were males and
21 females.
Thirteen stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 0.16 per 1,000
total population, and 9.8 per 1,000 live and stillbirths. Nine of the
stillbirths were males and 4 females.
The rate for England and Wales was 18.7 per 1,000 total births.

Details of the births in the area during the past ten years are given below:—
