BACTERIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS.
The County Council of Essex made arrangements at the end
of the year 1919 with Dr. John Beale, Essex Public Health
Laboratory, 91, Queen Victoria Street, E.C.4, for the examination
of specimens sent by any Authority throughout the County free
of charge. Formerly the Leyton Council used to pay for these
examinations.
The new arrangement has been made use of during the year,
and the following are the number of specimens sent
Diphtheria 307
Ringworm 107
Sputum 18
Widal's Test 1
Malaria 1
CANCER.
There were 118 deaths during the year, giving a death-rate
of .9 per 1,000 of the population.
INQUESTS.
The following verdicts were recorded at Inquests held in the
district during the year:—
Natural Causes 41
Accident 19
Drowning 1
Murder 1
Drinking corrosive acid whilst of unsound
mind 1
Want of proper attention at birth 3
Accidental poisoning 1
Suicide (2 self-inflicted wounds, 1 hanging,
1 carbolic acid poisoning, 1 fall
from window, 1 jumping in front of
