BACTERIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS.
The arrangements made with the County Medical Officer of
Health for the examination of pathological specimens are still in
force and continue to work satisfactorily.
During the year the following numbers of samples have been
sent for examination:—
Diphtheria 144
Ringworm 140
Sputum 15
Widal's Test 1
Shaving brush for Anthrax 1

CANCER.
There were 111 deaths during the year, giving a death-rate
ol '9 per 1,000 of the population.
INQUESTS.
The following verdicts were recorded at Inquests held in the
district during the year:—
Natural Causes 33
Accident 16
Misadventure 1
Manslaughter 2
Drowning 1
Overlain 1
Want of proper attention at birth 1
Suicide (2 self-inflicted wounds, 1 hanging,
2 coal gas poisoning, 1 carbolic
acid poisoning, 1 fall from window) 7
HOUSING.
House-to-house inspection is regularly carried on, especially
in the poorer neighbourhoods, in which it is found that houses tend
to become more or less insanitary chiefly owing to the class of
tenants occupying them.
