ANNUAL REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH. 1895.
Gentlemen,
I beg to present to you my Annual Report for the year 1895.
The year was ushered in by very mild and rainy weather, but in
February a long-continued season of frost commenced, which for duration
and severity has not been equalled for many years. During this period
the water supply of the District practically failed, through the mains
being frozen, and it was with the greatest difficulty that people could
be supplied with the minimum amount of water necessary for drinking
purposes.
This severe weather was succeeded by a hot and dry summer
during which, too, the water-supply again failed.
The summer continued to a late period, and up to the end of
the year the weather was of a very mild and wet character, with no
wintry weather worth mentioning.
We have, this year, experienced epidemics of Influenza, Measles,
and Diphtheria, and, towards the end of the year, Scarlet Fever seems
almost to have assumed epidemic proportions.
These diseases will be dealt with in detail under their respective
headings.
