Conversions.
Plans were agreed for the conversion of 1, 2 and 3, Mashiters
Cottages, New Road, Rainham, from pail closets to main sewer.
Relatively few instances now remain where anything like ready
conversions of this kind remain to be tackled.
Cesspools.
The only satisfactory entry under this heading would be of a "Nil"
order but that, alas, is still a distant dream.
It is surprising that more nuisance is not reported to us but probably
a spirit of mutual tolerance is engendered in districts where their occurrence
is commonplace.
No opportunity is being lost in eliminating them when a sewer
becomes available.
River Ingrebourne.
No improved story falls to be told in relation to the content of this
somewhat insignificant stream. It need only be asserted once again that
a good effluent is not good enough unless it also is adequately diluted. It
an effluent fails to be of the highest standard then the position is correspondingly
prejudiced. The River Ingrebourne therefore remains a public
health embarrassment to which an application of the solution is long
overdue.
Swimming Pool.
The Swimming Pool, in spite of the poor weather experienced, has
again proved a popular venue, 264,485 patrons being admitted for swimming
and a further 19,530 spectators. The swimmers total includes
61,548 visits by school children attending in classes. This is slightly
lower than last year, mainly due to school staffing difficulties, but a much
heavier programme has been planned for 1959. During the year 1,678
