in vials of 8,000 units are supplied free of charge to any
medical men requiring it, the only stipulation being that
they shall be used for cases genuinely unable to pay
for themselves. I find this anti-toxin is very generally
used and the large majority of cases admitted into the
hospital have already been injected before arrival.
Only 5 cases of Encephalitis Lethargica have been
notified during the past 5 years, one in 1921, and four
this year.
There have been no "return" cases of Scarlet Fever
that I am aware of during the past 5 years.
The number of notifications received under the
Regulations of January 7th, 1919 is very low. One
case only of malaria has been notified since 1920, and
that this year; no cases of dysentery or trench fever
occurred, and of pneumonia 9 cases were notified in
1921, 6 in 1922, 10 in 1923, 21 in 1924, and 8 this year.
A Table of Cases of Notifiable Diseases during the year
is appended.
An arrangement is in force with Dr. Eastes, of 6,
Harley Street, W., to examine sputums at the cost of
the Council, and all medical men in the district are
supplied with sterile bottles for this purpose, and also,
as above alluded to, for the free examination of swabs.
Copies of all resultant reports are sent to me as well as
to the medical men concerned. I find a very general
use is made of these facilities.
With regard to "contacts" swabs are taken either
by myself or the medical attendant at my request of any
possible contacts, and should any case prove positive
they are removed to the Isolation Hospital for treatment
and kept isolated until their swab gives a negative
result.
All cases of Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever are removed
to the Council's Isolation Hospital, except those
which can be safely isolated at home, the premises
visited by the Sanitary Inspector and disinfected, infected
bedding and clothing removed and treated in the
steam disinfector at the hospital.
