bakehouse in the Little Stanmore Parish has been closed
and a new one was erected. On one occasion a dog was
seen lying on a quantity of uncovered vegetables in a
fruit and vegetable cart. A request was made to the
man in charge to remove the dog, which request was
immediately complied with. It is frequently the practice
of shopkeepers to put bags of potatoes, etc., outside
their shop door, and in this way they are often fouled by
any passing dog.
A baker's roundsman was noticed taking bread
about the district in two open-railed carriers fixed on
the back and front of his bicycle, the bread in consequence
being liable to be contaminated by mud splashings
from the road. The baker has now stopped this
method of conveying bread. There are unfortunately no
regulations at present in force dealing with the exposure
for sale and handling of bread.
(d) As far as I know there have been no cases of
food-poisoning in the district.
Prevalence of, and Control Over, Infectious Diseases.
Infectious Diseases Generally.
Since 1920 the amount of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria
cases has been steadily diminishing. For instance
in 1921 there were 62 cases of Scarlet Fever in the district,
this year there were 40. Similarly with Diphtheria
there were 42 cases in 1921, and this year 15 only.
The number of notifications was exceptionally low in
1923, there being only 19 cases of Scarlet Fever and 8
of Diphtheria. There has, therefore, been no epidemic
during the years alluded to of any notifiable infectious
disease in the district, and I have no particular comments
to make as to the source or spread of infection.
Concerning Diphtheria and anti-toxin, all medical
men in the district are supplied free of charge
with swabs for immediate use when required, which are
examined at the cost of the Council by Dr. Eastes, 6,
Harley Street, W., and Messrs. Parke Davis' Anti-toxin
