The number of people attending at The Riding was 861, 22 being recalled for
further investigation.
At Temple Fortune, 1,109 people were X-rayed and 16 were recalled for further
examination.
(3) Tuberculosis Survey on The Watling Estate.
A survey of tuberculosis on The Watling Estate was carried out during September,
when the mobile x ray unit made a street by street tour and a chest x ray was offered
to all persons over the age of 14 years.
The survey was carried out in conjunction with the Director of the Mass Radiography
Unit, the Chest Physician at Edgware Chest Clinic and the Area Medical Officer,
Area No. 4, Middlesex County Council.
At the same time a Mantoux skin test was offered to all children attending infant
and junior schools on the Estate.
The success of the survey depended first of all on the publicity and secondly on
the willing co operation of the residents.
The visit of the mobile x-ray was widely advertised by posters and handbills
and was given considerable prominence in both the local newspapers and "The Watling
Resident .
A film on tuberculosis and its prevention together with a speaker, were offered
to several organisations at the Watling Community Centre and both were accepted by
the Old People's Club, The Burnt Oak Townswomen's Guild, the Youth Club, the Youth
Hostels Association and the Women's Adult School. The film was also shown at the
Young Wives Club at Woodcroft Hall.
Wien the X-ray Unit visited, a door-to-door canvass was carried out, largely by
voluntary workers recruited from several women's organisations but mainly from the
Burnt Oak Townswomen's Guild.
The survey was very successful as 2,242 people were x-rayed. This total included
a large number of older people and housewives who attended for the first time.
Out of the total number x-rayed, 54 were referred to the Chest Clinic for
further examination and of these, three cases were found to be suffering from
tuberculosis in an infectious form.
I am indebted to Dr. J. R. Mikhail, Medical Director of Mass X-Ray Lhit 5B, for
his co-operation and for supplying me with the figures showing the results of the
survey.
