The same 53 people were also asked if they had seen the visit of the X-Ray Unit
advertised elsewhere in addition to the advertisement first seen and they replied as
follows:-
Posters 30
Advertisement in papers 22
Leaflets 12
Banner 11
Films 2
Letter of Medical Officer 2
of Health.
This investigation is of some value in demonstrating the effectiveness of the
various methods of publicity.
Although the three minute film "Also coming shortly" was mentioned by only one
out of the 53 interviewed, and the banner by two, they must have been seen by
hundreds of people and it was disappointing to realise how small a number was
influenced by either.
The Editor of the local newspaper was kind enough to insert a letter from the
Medical Officer of Health stressing the value of mass x-ray but not one of the 53
persons in the random sample was persuaded by it to attend although 17 of them had
seen the advertisement in the same paper and had attended for mass x-ray. Twenty-two
persons in the sample attended as a result of having seen the posters.
The second analysis, although it does not show the method instrumental in
causing the people to visit the unit, indicates that the posters and the advertisement
in the local paper were noticed by the largest number of people.
It would appear therefore that well displayed posters and prominent press
advertisement is the most effective means of getting people to attend for x-rays.
A report on the Mass X-Ray survey is given below:-
Number x-rayed 1,371
Number re-called for large film 24
No further action 11
Referred far further action 12
Person did not attend 1
