Deaths.
There was an increase of 67 in the number of deaths. This, coupled with the fact
that the population figure was less than that for last year, gives an increased
corrected death rate of 10.52 per 1,000 home population compared with 9.35 in 1954.
This rate is slightly higher than that for the County of Middlesex which is
10.3per 1,000 home population but less than that for England and Wales which is 11.7.
As in previous years, heart and associated diseases accounted for the largest
number of deaths, 573 people dying from these causes. Second in the principal causes
was cancer. In 1955, 326 people died from all forms of cancer compared with 295 in
1954.
Deaths from motor vehicle and other accidents increased, six more people dying
from these causes than in 1954
Fewer people committed suicide, 11 persons taking their own lives compared with
14 last year.
The number of deaths from influenza, pneumonia and bronchitis was 171. an
increase of 57 over the number for 1954.
Infantile Mortality.
There was a reduction of two in the number of children dying in the first year
of life, giving an infantile mortality rate of 20.7 per 1,000 live births which is
one of the lowest on record.
This compares favourably with the rate for England and Wales of 24 9 per 1,000
live births but is higher than that for the County of Middlesex which is 19.4.
One illegitimate child died under the ageofl year giving an infantile mortality
rate for this group of 9.8 per 1,000 illegitimate live births.
Thirty one children died under the ageofone month, giving a neo-natal mortality
rate of 16.0 per 1,000 live births compared with 17.3 for England and Wales and 14.1
for the County of Middlesex.
Maternal Mortality.
One woman died as a result of childbirth, giving a maternal mortality rate of
051 per 1,000 total (live and still) births.
The rate for England and Wales is 0.64 per 1,000 total (live and still) births
and that for the County of Middlesex 0.47.
