VITAL STATISTICS
Population.
According to the figure supplied by the Registrar General the estimated mid-year
population for 1955 was 154,000.
This is 800 less than the Registrar General's estimate of population for 1954,
and 1875 less than the Census figure for 1951,
Births.
The number of live births recorded during the year fell, 1,934 occurring
compared with 2,008 in 1954
The birth rate, therefore, continued its downward trend and the corrected birth
rate of 11.8 per 1,000 population is the lowest rate recorded since 1941,
Still births declined, 31 compared with 32 in 1954, but owing to the fact that
there were fewer births in 1955 the still birth rate per 1,000 total births was
higher than in 1954, namely, 15.77 compared with 15.68,
If, however, the population figure is taken the still birth rate per 1,000 home
population is slightly less than that for 1354, 0.20 compared with 0.21,
