Deaths from Cancer of the Lung and Bronchus.
In 1950 the Registrar General added to the list of causes of death "Cancer of
the lung and bronchus". Prior to 1950 these deaths were included in "Cancer of all
other sites".
Since that date 356 deaths from lung cancer have occurred in the Borough of
Hendon.
Over the same period the number of deaths from respiratory tuberculosis
was 125.
An increase in the number of deaths from cancer of the lung and bronchus and a
gradual diminution in the number of deaths from respiratory tuberculosis has been a
feature of the Registrar General's statistics for England and Wales during the last
six years and it is of interest to realise that here in Hendon the Graph shows a
similar trend.
Approximately 80% of the persons dying from cancer of the lung and bronchus are
men and 20% women and medical research suggests that those who have smoked 200,000
cigarettes are more liable to lung cancer than non-smokers.
During the year deaths from cancer of the lung increased by 9. sixty-nine
persons, 56 males and 13 females, dying from this cause compared with 58 in 1954,
