SCHOOL HYGIENE.
Speaking- generally, the standard in the Provided Schools
is very high, these being good, buildings, wel,l situated, with,
sufficient space around them and the equipment and sanitary
arrangements good.
The Non-Provided Schools do not reach such a high
standard, but some of these may be said to attain a very satisfactory
standard, and in the case of the less satisfactory ones,
it is rather a matter of their being cramped and inconvenient,
than of any conditions actually inimical to the health of the
scholars being present. There is no doubt, however, that
attendance at a well-planned, roomy, well-equipped school
such as Wessex Gardens or Garden Suburb School, with pleasant
surroundings, well-lighted corridors, excellent latrines
and general air of freshness and hygiene, tends to have a
better effect on the health of the scholars than attendance at
the less satisfactory schools. It also gives them an objectlesson
in hygiene which ought to have its effect in producing
a desire for, and appreciation of a healthy environment,
and in furthering the cultivation of hygienic habits.
The following is a summary of the conditions existing,
arranged under the various headings prescribed by the Board
of Education.
Buildings and Surroundings.—
Provided Schools:
Satisfactory in all cases—only 2 (Child's Hill and The
Hyde) have 2 storeys of class-rooms, and these are well
constructed, satisfactory schools. The rest have only
one storey of class-rooms, in some cases arranged round
a Hall of greater height.
Garden Suburb and Wessex Gardens Schools are
examples of a very good type of construction, the classrooms
having windows on both sides (on one side over
a central corridor) so allowing of cross-ventilation and
excellent lighting. There is plenty of air-space around
the school, in every case and sufficient playground accommodation.
Hyde school has a large playing-field
adjacent,
