To comply satisfactorily with the Milk and Dairies
Amendment Act, 1922, Section 2 (3), re-registration of all
persons engaged in the milk trade has been effected and new
registers have been compiled, one of Wholesalers and Producers
and one of Retail Dairymen and Purveyors.
During the year one cowshed has been closed (premises
unsatisfactory), one new shed has been erected and occupied
and one new dairy has been opened.
The milk sold and delivered from 19 dairy premises is
received from Central Depots, bottled and capped with a disc,
ready for distribution so that no cleansing of bottles or vessels
is carried out on these dairy premises. All empty bottles are
collected and conveyed to the Central Depot where they are
cleansed, sterilized and refilled.
11 Retailers of Milk hold Licences, issued by the Sanitary
Authority, to sell "Graded Milk" under the Milk
Special Designations Orders, 1922 and 1923.
The dairy premises have been very frequently inspected
and found kept in a very cleanly condition.
It is hoped the adoption of bottles in place of milk cans
(which is now almost general) will assist in the production
of a cleaner milk supply.
The cowsheds have been inspected as frequently as
possible. There has been an average of 320 milch cows
stalled in the sheds, most of which are habitually grazed.
The Council's Veterinary Surgeon has examined the
cows quarterly and has reported favourably upon their
condition.
NUMBER AND CONDITION OF SLAUGHTER HOUSES.
Registered or Licensed.
Registered Slaughter Houses 7
Licensed Slaughter Houses 2
Very little slaughtering has taken place on these
premises, as most of the meat sold by the butchers in the
district comes from the London Meat Market.
Visits have been paid to the Slaughter Houses as frequently
as possible at the time of killing, and to ensure the
same being kept in conformity with the Bye-Laws.
