A prepaid post card addressed to the local service centre is also
provided to each customer who can of course telephone their
usual service centre if the matter is urgent.
Special teams of Post Conversion fitters are employed by
the Conversion Units to deal with requests for service and Home
Service Advisers are on call to assist the elderly or disabled in
particular.
I feel that I must express my appreciation of the valued
help and co-operation of the staff of Schools, Hospitals and
Council Officials during conversion of premises with which they
have been concerned and in particular my most sincere thanks to
Officials of the Police for the most commendable way that they
have helped in situations involving a mobile labour force using
scores of vehicles."
SHOPS ACTS
The Shops Acts 1950—65 deal with the closing hours of
shops and permitted transactions during specified hours; makes
provision for meal and rest intervals, weekly half-holidays, holidays
in lieu of Sunday employment of all employees within scope
of the Acts and also controls the working hours of young persons.
Similarly the Young Persons (Employment) Acts, 1938—64
regulate the employment of young persons in certain other occupations,
other than in shops, such as operating cinematograph
apparatus, attendance on persons resorting to a public swimming
bath, operating a mechanically propelled lift or hoist and certain
other circumstances.
The rationalisation of the Sunday trading laws still have
not made the 'Statute Books'. There are anomolies in the main Act,
necessary years ago, which have become outdated by social
conditions prevailing today. A fourth attempt to sort out the basic
problems has successfully passed through the House of Lords
and now awaits its appearance in the House of Commons.
During the year a series of complaints were received regarding
employment conditions of young persons at a petrol filling station.
The complaints were not without foundation and enquiries involved
exceptional out of hours working by the Inspectors, both in the
evenings and at weekends.
