Altogether the cost to the Council of this one enquiry was
calculated as in excess of £200. The firm concerned are due to
answer numerous summonses early in the new year.
With the completion of additional phases of the Romford
Central Shopping Centre, more occupiers are taking advantageof
the local Orders permitting six-day trading on a range of goods
outside those normally exempted. During the year a further Order
was granted allowing the sale of footwear on the 'early closing
day'.
Generally the observance of the Shops Acts has been satisfactory
apart from the notable exception above, although it was
considered necessary to prosecute on three other occasions. The
majority of contraventions found were of a minor nature and soon
remedied with usually only one follow-up visit required.
