The Council maintained representation on the National
Society for Clean Air and the Standing Conference of Co-operative
Bodies for the Investigation of Atmospheric Pollution.
Chimney Heights—Clean Air Act, 1968, Section 6
Thirteen applications for approval to chimney heights were
received during the year-an increase of three on the previous
year.
In four cases alterations to heights were required, the other
nine being satisfactory.
Conversion to Natural Gas
North Thames Gas have very kindly supplied further information
to that mentioned in last year's report, in their programme
of conversion to natural gas within the Borough:-
"During the period under review operations by our Conversion
Unit No. 8 based at Kavanaghs Road, Brentwood were extended
to include conversion of more than 200,000 gas appliances
in about 70,000 premises within Havering. The work involved
mainly a variety of appliances in use in domestic dwellings in
widely varying circumstances, special attention being necessary
in dealing with many elderly, sick and disabled people. In moving
progressively, sectorby sector through thearea, factories, schools
churches, hospitals, etc., and many commercial premises have
required detailed attention to special equipment where essential
services had to be maintained during the change-over.
Conversion of the majority of domestic appliances has
taken the form of a straight exchange of components, i.e. burners,
thermostat, pilots, etc., and in replacing the working parts of most
appliances from the operational point of view a converted area is
to all intents one populated entirely by new or modified appliances.
We know that for various reasons, some appliances may require
further attention and we make special arrangements to deal with
requests for service after conversion.
To enable customers to obtain service easily, a Mobile
Report Centre is stationed in each sector for three weeks after
conversion. Customers are advised by letter of the exact location.
