In March a 10% test of Corporation sewers, consisting
of 101 manholes was carried out which resulted in no
takes being recorded. Six manholes, inclusive of a number
which were found to be infested at the immediately preceding
treatment were baited with oatmeal, sugar, oil,
Warfarin and added preservative, when once again no
takes were recorded.
The Prevention of Damage by Pests (application to
Shipping) Order, 1951, applies to the many wharfs, jetties
and dry slipways in the Borough, and by way of implementation
the following visits and inspections were
made:—
Commercial barges 38
Refuse barges 16
Coastwise vessels 15
Tugs 26
Miscellaneous craft 3

D (5)n Pest control.
For matters which are outside the scope of the statutory
provisions of the Public Health Act, i.e. unstopping
of waste pipes, private drains, sewers, destruction of wasps'
and ants nests, also insects generally, the practical assistance
of the Department's outdoor service is available to
occupiers who need such help. Wasps, apparently because
of the prolonged dry weather were more than usually active
during the summer, and a large number of requests for
assistance was received. In all, 47 wasps' nests were
destroyed
Clothing which was consigned for export to Italy was
duly disinfected in the appropriate manner.
