The Prevention of Damage by Pests (application to Shipping)
Order 1951 applies to the many wharfs, jetties and
dry slipways in the riparian Borough, and by way of implementation,
the following visits were made: —
Lighters 73
Refuse barges 18
Coastwise vessels 20

against ship rat was submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food in July, 1957.
Since 1951, when known reservoirs of infestation
numbered five, such locations have been reduced to one,
and this site is subject to constant and concentrated control.
Reduction in incidence of infestations is attributed to the
following: —
1. (a) Reconstruction, and (b) Demolition of certain industrial
premises including wharfs which formerly provided
reservoirs, and (c) satisfactory rat-proofing, (d) Methodical
rat destruction co-incided with the foregoing.
2 Change of user of premises and change of industry.
3- Re-inforcement and concreting of the river bank.
4. Berthed vessels at wharfs being the subject of de-ratisation
certificates.
D (5)n Pest control.
For matters which are outside the scope of the Public
Health Act, practical assistance of the Department's outdoor
service is available to occupiers. In this regard, many private
drains and sewers have been cleared, and insect infestations
dealt with. Wasps were more than usually active during
The summer, and 10 nests were destroyed.
