1—6 cubic yards "S.D." Freighter (petrol) dust-van.
2—10 cubic yards dustless-loading "S.D." Freighters.
3—15 cubic yards "S.D." Moveable Floor Rear-loading
Freighters.
1—Tuke and Bell 10 cubic yards "Barrier" Type end-loading
vehicle.
The remaining two electric vehicles were discarded during the
year, and the three rear-loading Freighters included in the above
list were pucheased.
They were of the rear-loading roller-floor type, and experience
in the use of them led us to modify the method of loading insofar
as the position of the winding handle has been moved farther away
from the rear of the body in order to obviate as far as possible the
discomfort which the man formerly experienced from dust blowing
over him as the refuse was ejected from the lorry. The latest type
of this make of roller-floored vehicle is operated both for loading and
unloading from the front end of the vehicle, and in the event of any
further purchase of similar machines this will undoubtedly be the
type used.
I am of the opinion that, on the whole, the roller-floored type
of refuse collection vehicle gives very satisfactory service, and is
undoubtedly the best type at present available for use on a dump.
An additional garage for four vehicles has been erected at the
Lincoln Road Depot, and all the transport of the Department is now
concentrated at this Depot.
Arrangements exist whereby trade refuse is removed from shopkeepers'
premises on payment of a prearranged charge. The
income from this source was £72 17s. during the year.
During the year, 17,351 tons of refuse were collected and
disposed of at a cost of £10,932. This equals 12s. 0.2d. per ton for
collection and disposal, as against 11s. 6.9d. in 1933. The cost
per head of the population is 2s. 9.5d. per annum, or 0.6d. per week.
The average for each house is 11s. 7.5d. per year, or 2.7d. per week.
DISPOSAL OF REFUSE.
The dumping site at Brown's field, Enfield Highway, on which
the refuse of Enfield has been disposed of during the year has only a
short life. The Council is surveying the District as to the possibility
of obtaining land for tipping purposes.
We have again been rather fortunate in obtaining covering
material from road works in progress.
Visits have been received from other Districts, and from as far
abroad as Palestine, with regard to our method of refuse collection
and disposal.
