SEWER FLUSHING.
This work is carried out by the Department, and all sewers
are regularly examined and flushed by men whose special duty it is.
A further duty is the clearing and repair of sewers, and the
regular examination of all main drains has been maintained.
The main drainage at the rear of Hanby Terrace, Ordnance
Road, and at Nos. 61 to 85, Churchbury Road, has been re-constructed.
The question will arise during the coming year with regard to
having a second gang of sewer flushers, owing to the considerable
increase in the District, and of this I hope to speak in the next
Report.
CESSPOOLS.
The various cesspools in the District are examined and emptied
by special members of the Staff, a proportion of the cost of the work
entailed being charged to the owner or occupier of the property.
I have pleasure in reporting that the old manual pump in use
for many years in Enfield has been replaced by the latest up-to-date
cesspool cum gulley emptying machine.
This machine has been purchased from Messrs. Shelvoke and
Drewry, and so far as the short experience will allow one to express
an opinion, it is a considerable benefit from a sanitary point of view.
In emptying the gulleys throughout the District it has been found
that the work done is of such a nature that has never before been
done in Enfield, that is with regard to emptying the whole of the
gulley to the bottom.
The vehicle is so designed that the whole capacity of the
cylindrical main tank is immediately available for emptying either
cesspools or gulleys, clean water for re-sealing gulleys being carried
to rectangular side tanks.
SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS.
The arrangement with the Education Committee is still carried
out as ragards the conveniences at all non-provided Schools, and
these receive daily attention as regards cleansing by one of the
employees of this Department. The drainage systems of all elementary
and secondary schools in the District are examined by the
Sanitary Inspectors.
At the request of the Education Committee I submitted a
report on the cleansing of the drainage arrangements attached to the
provided Schools, but that has not at present advanced to any
further stage.
