There is the prospect that this work will considerably increase
under the provision of the new Shops Act.
MOTOR AMBULANCES.
There are two Motor Ambulances for use in the District and
both are under the charge of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, the Fire Brigade
Superintendent.
PETROLEUM.
The work in connection with the storage of Petroleum is still
on the increase, and, as previously stated, all new petroleum stores,
including pumps and tanks, are, at the time of installation, under
inspection by one of the Sanitary Inspectors. In every case the
proper air test is applied to the tanks before permission is given
for them to be covered over.
One of the duties of this Department is the examination of all
plans of proposed garages sent to the Engineer and Surveyor's
Department, and reports are made on them to the Plans and Byelaws
Committee for submission to the Council for approval.
With regard to applications for the storage of petroleum, this
duty has been further extended by the fact that Bye-laws have been
made by the Middlesex County Council, and more extended consideration
has to be given to the whole matter.
SHOPS ACTS.
The duties of inspectors under the Shops Acts are carried out
by this Department.
It was found necessary during the year to take action in three
cases against shopkeepers for contraventions of the Act, and fines

we had had to take proceedings.
We must look forward to considerable increase of the work in
the future under the new Shops Act as regards the sanitation of all
shops—old and new. Arrangements have been made that the plans
of all new shops shall be sent to this Department for report.
REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
There is a weekly collection of refuse throughout the District,
but we are being asked in some quarters for a bi-weekly collection.
Thirty-two Dustmen and the following vehicles are in use for
the removal of house refuse:—
