Many educational visits were made and regular attendance at the
Swimming Baths continued. Several children gained swimming certificates.
The ophthalmologist visited the school twice during the year. The
routine Medical Examinations were carried out by Dr. Wield and the School
Dental Officer examined the children's teeth. I wish to thank all these
people for their help and interest in the children.
The year ended with a Nativity Play in which all the children took
part. At the Christmas Party the children received presents kindly provided
by the Education Committee.
Children on Roll 31.12.71 18
Children admitted during the year 4
Transferred to Normal Secondary School 1
During the year no child was categorised as deaf, while six children
were assessed as partially hearing. Five of these were admitted to the
Kingsley School Day Unit and one child was on the waiting list at the end
of the year.
Dr. Morgan, Senior Medical Officer responsible for the Day Units, visited
frequently, and Mr. Parsons (Consultant Otologist) attended at each Unit to
review all the children. Parents are invited to this review and teachers are
also present, together with Dr. Morgan and Mr. Oakley, the Borough Teacher
of the Deaf.
The reorganisation of the Units into a Nursery and Infant Partially
Hearing Unit and a Nursery and Infant Deaf Unit in the Infant School and
Junior Deaf and Partially Hearing Units attached to the Junior School, which
was mainly carried out in the previous year, has proved quite successful.
This will continue to be the pattern of provision and early next year an extra
classroom attached to the Senior School will be provided for the Junior Deaf
Unit so that these children who are at present in a classroom in the Infant
School may move bodily as well as administratively to that School.
Details of the Senior Partially Hearing Unit are given later in the report.
I am grateful to the Chief Education Officer for the following reports.
