Nursery and Infant, Deaf and Partially Hearing Units,
Kingsley Infants' School
There are 16 children attending the Units at Kingsley Infants' School,
15 who have a hearing handicap, and 1 who is also spastic/deaf. The
Organisation remains as last year.
There are two Nursery/Infant Units with 8 children in each Unit, both
Units have a qualified teacher for Deaf and Partially Hearing children. Two
assistants are available to tfie Units, and on one day a week a technician/
assistant comes to work in the Units. It is proposed that next year, a
qualified teacher will come every morning to take individual or small groups
of children.
The Units are organised so that one caters for the needs of the children
who have partial/severe loss of hearing, and the other caters for those
children who have severe/very severe hearing loss. There are 8 children in
each Unit whose ages range from 3-7 years. 2 children were recommended
for transfer to other schools, and one other child was sent to Margate. It is
hoped that the 2 others who have been recommended can soon be suitably
placed.
Severe/very severe hearing loss - 8 Children
In this class the children are basically divided into two groups, the 3
older children and the 5 younger ones. However (especially in the younger
group) emphasis is placed upon individual work and attention because of the
varying characteristics of each child (intelligence - hearing loss, age, concentration
span etc.)
Every child has made progress in the unit, in language development and
comprehension and in their general education.
The children join the main school at lunch time and play time.
Partial/severe hearing loss - 8 children.
This Unit is chiefly composed of partially hearing children; the hearing
loss of the children ranges between the 'true partially hearing' to the
'severely partially hearing'. There are nine children in the Unit including a
severely spastic child.
The Unit caters for children whose ages range from three to seven years.
The class is divided into two main groups:—
The Nursery Children (3 - 5 years)
The Infant Children (5-7 years)
The younger children benefit from individual attention and speech training.
The chief aim is to encourage the children to use speech as their means of
communication. Pre reading, writing skills - as well as pre number skills
help to reinforce vocabulary acquired.
