The Mild and Potential cases include those showing the
first initial symptoms of "growing pains" in highly strung
children.
The "Definitely Active" group included cases with
physical signs of rheumatic fever or chorea.
"Quiescent Cases" are those which at a previous examination
had shown signs of mild and potential rheumatism or of
active rheumatism but which had now settled down and were no
longer active.
Primary Examinations.
Amongst the 24 new cases the following Rheumatic manifestations
were recorded:—
Rheumatic pains 20
Chorea (suspected) 2
Carditis( definite) 4
Carditis (suspected) 3
Tonsillitis and Infected Tonsils 5
Sore Throat (but Tonsils and Adenoids removed) 1
Family Histories.
Of the new cases, 13 gave a history of rheumatism in the
family, G being histories of rheumatic fever in parents or
brothers and sisters.
Nervous Conditions.
Recorded in 22 out of the 24 cases
Highly strung 6
Headaches 3
Night terrors 1
Enuresis 3
Twitchings 2
Past history of Chorea or other nervous condition 3
Minor degrees of nervous disorders 4
Often a combination of more than one of the above symptoms
was manifested.
Re-examinations.
Ten children were re-examined: 3 were worse, 2 showed no
essential change, 2 were improved, and 3 were quiescent.
