Table VI. in the Appendix gives details of the patients admitted and
discharged during the year.
Mixed Infection.
11 patients on admission to the Borough Hospital were found
to show evidence of two concurrent infections: 3 had scarlet fever
with diphtheria, 2 scarlet fever with chickenpox, 1 had scarlet fever
and mumps, 1 had scarlet fever and rubella, 1 had measles and
whooping cough, 2 diphtheria with chickenpox, 1 diphtheria with
measles.
Cross-Infection.
2 cases developed a second disease subsequent to admission to
the Borough Hospital.
Health of Staff at Borough Hospital.
The following illnesses occurred among the staff:—
Scarlet fever, 3; bronchitis and heart disease (fatal), 1;
diphtheria, 1.
Schick Test.
This test was applied throughout the year to new members of
the nursing and domestic staffs, with a view to ascertaining those
susceptible to diphtheria, and preventing their employment in
diphtheria wards until immunised by treatment with toxinantitoxin.
The single case of diphtheria among the staff was that
of a wardmaid who had not undergone the Schick test.
Ambulance Service.
2 Motor ambulances (Wolseley and Ford) are kept at the
Borough Hospital for conveyance of patients with infectious
disease. 544 patients were conveyed and 680 journeys were made.
