At the request of Mr. Todd, the surgeon to the Orthopædic Clinic,
corrective classes were arranged in three more Girls' departments.
It is hoped that these additional classes will start work early in
1926.
(h) Physical Training in Boys' Departments.
For the first time I am able to include a report on the physical
training in Boys' Departments, for which I am indebted to Mr.
Alfred Drew, Assistant Inspector of Schools: —
The Board of Education's Syllabus of Physical Training is
followed in all Boys' Departments and the stipulated minimum
period of sixty minutes per week is adhered to by all Boys'
Schools. Ten schools have a constant allotment of 60 minutes for
all classes, while 15 schools have an increased amount for certain
classes up to a maximum of lhr. 40mins.
In general the work in the Boys' Schools consists of Physical
Exercises proper, simple relief and recreative activities interspersed
among these, games capable of being played in the playground
or school hall, and organised games and sports generally conducted
by the teachers outside school hours. It is hoped that
during the coming school year some additions may be made to the
relief and recreative activities and that some simple sports events
may be introduced, suitable for the school playground to meet the
needs of schools where a visit to a recreation ground is not
frequent owing to its inaccessibility.
With regard to the very creditable work done by the teachers
in outside games the past year has been most encouraging.
The seventeenth Annual Sports Meeting was held at the
Crystal Palace on July 1st. There were 1,230 entrants (including
girls) and 71 events were competed in well up to time and without
a hitch. Among the boys the highest number of points scored by
any one school was 44. Comment on the Sports must not be
passed over without reference to the fact that children from the
Croydon Elementary Schools took part in three other Sports
meetings held during the year. At the invitation of the Surbiton
and District Elementary Schools Athletic Association, boys from
the Croydon schools took part in Inter District Hurdles and Team
Races on June 26th at Tolworth Recreation Ground, Surbiton.
