Dysentery.
Here, again, the number of notifications received was very
low. Of the total of 14, six were in respect of children who moved
into the district after having been in contact with cases. Although
secreting the organism, they were not in fact showing clinical
symptoms.
Food Poisoning.
With a total of seven cases, the incidence of food poisoning
remains low. Four of these were mild cases, occurring in the same
family and the cause of the outbreak was not ascertained. Another
case occurred in an Italian, temporarily resident in this country,
who was found to be affected with the unusual Salmonella Bredeney.
All notified cases of food poisoning, together with other similar
conditions which might not be notified, were the subject of detailed
investigation to ascertain the cause of the disease and to prevent
spread of infection. One sufferer, who came to notice, failed to
respond to continued treatment and had to be kept under supervision
for ten months before she could be declared free from infection.
