General.

1962 was no exception in this respect.

The total number of notifications received was noteworthy in
that it was less than half of that for any other year in the history
of the Urban District. Even so, measles still accounted for almost
one half of these notifications.
The picture for 1962 is perhaps even better than appears on
the surface, because the bulk of notifications for other diseases were
in respect of the minor infections. There was for instance, no
case of typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, or any of the other
infections which were more prevalent a few years ago.
Acute Anterior Poliomyelitis and Vaccination.
There was a complete absence of this disease in the Urban
District during 1962.

The County Medical Officer has kindly supplied the following information with regard to Poliomyelitis Vaccination, based on the return submitted to the Ministry of Health.
