Ophthalmic Surgery, Orthopædic and Traumatic Surgery,

opened during the year.
The Control of Infection Committee, on which I am
represented, continued to function. Voluntary organisations
including the British Red Cross Society, the Women's Voluntary
Service and the Friends of the Sidcup Hospitals continue to work
for all local hospitals.
The Secretary to the Sidcup Hospital Management Committee
informs me that plans are being prepared for the new hospital to
replace the existing buildings at Queen Mary's. It has been agreed
with the Ministry of Health that the beddage will be in the order of
500; that there will be greatly increased provision for chronic
sick; that a maternity department and an ophthalmic department
which will include a national centre for corneo-plastic work will be
provided; and that in addition the new hospital will rank as a
major accident centre.
Grove Park Hospital.
This hospital comes within the purview of the Lewisham
Group Hospital Management Committee, and has only five blocks
comprising 265 beds which come within the Urban District
boundaries. 202 of these are used for tuberculous patients, whilst
the other 63 are reserved for non-tuberculous thoracic cases.
Venereal Diseases.
Patients are referred to the various hospitals with specialist
clinics for dealing with these diseases. None of these clinics is
situate within the Urban District.
COUNTY COUNCIL SERVICES.
Ambulance Service.
The district is served by the ambulance depot at Bromley,
where at the present time, there are twenty-seven ambulances and
twenty-two sitting case cars available. The majority of these
vehicles are radio-controlled. There is also a sub-depot at Main
Road, Sidcup.
