Soups
A dehydrated vegetable soup contained 8 1% of fat, but when reconstituted the
prepared soup contained less than 1% which was considered poor for a soup described as
"creamed style".
Tomato Paste
A small can of tomato paste was found to have an excessive content of tin and
copper. Further cans in the shop were opened and in view of the fact that in every
instance the internal lacquering of the cans was peeling, the shop owner surrendered his
stock of this particular brand.
Whisky
One sample contained 1% added water which appeared to be due to the optic
having been rinsed just prior to the sample having been purchased.
Soft Drinks
In one sample of Apple Juice the Vitamin C content was below the amount
declared on the label by 8mg. per fluid ounce; whilst a sample of Orangeade contained
the artificial sweetener saccharin which was not declared on the label.
Comments on the other samples reported as being unsatisfactory by reason of
labelling defects will be found under the section headed "Labelling of Food".
Ice Cream
There is one factory in the Borough where ice cream is manufactured.
The following table shows the number of samples of ice cream submitted for examination under The Ice Cream (Heat Treatment, etc) Regulations 1959 and 1963.
