The following comments are made regarding some of the unsatisfactory samples:-
Sausages
One sample of sausages was found to contain preservative in excess of the
amount permitted by the Preservatives in Food Regulations 1962, whilst another sample
contained preservative which had not been declared.
Mince
One sample of minced beef was found to contain sulphur dioxide preservative to
the extent of 2.300 p.p.m. A fine of £75 with £25 costs was imposed when proceedings
were instituted against the butcher concerned.
Porkettes
A meat product prepared and packed on the premises of a supermarket was found
to contain a non-permitted colour which had been absorbed from the print on a label
placed on the meat before being wrapped in polythene film.
Peche Dessert
A sample of imported dessert was found to contain sorbic acid to the extent of
65 p.p.m. This is not permitted under existing legislation in this country in respect of a
product of this type.
