DEPARTMENTAL.
At the end of the year the staff of the Public Health Department, in addition
to the Medical Officer of Health, consisted of a deputy-medical officer of health
(Dr. J. R. Prior, Finchley), 5 men and 4 women sanitary inspectors, and one chief
and 2 assistant (women) clerks, and an office youth.
The number of male inspectors in normal times is 10, and the clerical staff
numbers 6, and in order to permit of the work being done considerable rearrangements
were necessary. All the male members of the staff who remained being
either over military age or unfit for service, with the utmost readiness, without
extra reward, undertook extra duties, and most loyally and fully did all that was
allotted to them.
No additional men were appointed to the staff during the year, two women
clerks taking over the work of certain of the male clerks who had gone on service.
In the outdoor staff attached to the department the war caused a number of
changes. The mortuary keeper having enlisted, his work was divided in such a way
as to allow of his wife doing part, and a number of temporary attendants for the
underground conveniences were taken on to replace those who had either been called
up or enlisted.
The Public Health Committee throughout the year were still responsible for
the supervision of the disinfecting staff—2 men; the staff of the shelter and baths
—a matron, and one female and 2 male attendants; the women attendants at the
underground conveniences and the men employed in flushing the overground
conveniences.
