actual number of occupied houses in the parish at the present date ;
all I can obtain from the rate collectors is an opinion that '' the
houses number about 17,000."

BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the parish during the
year was 4,818, against 4,869 in 1896, indicating a decrease of 51
on the year, but as the registration year 1896 included 53 weeks,
whilst 1897 only includes 52, this decrease is apparent and not real.
The excess of the births over the deaths was 2,057. Table " B ''
shows this and compares the two years
