The North Sub.district contributed 1961 of the births as against
1892 in the previous year; the South 1333 as against a similar
number in the previous year; and the East 1524 as against 1644.
DEATHS.
During the past year, a total of 2551 deaths was registered in
the parish, equal to an uncorrected death.rate of 17.4. By the
exclusion of the deaths of 148 non.parishioners dying within the
parish, and the inclusion of the deaths of 358 parishioners registered
in other parts of the Metropolis, a net total of 2761 is obtained.
The deaths in each sub.district, corrected by distribution in a
similar manner, were as under :—
North 1,028
South 803
East 930
Total 2,761
DEATH RATE.
Upon the basis of the estimated population I calculate a death
rate of 21.36. This is a decrease of one per thousand from the rate
of the previous year (of fifty.three weeks), but it is no less than 3.0
in excess of the corresponding rate for the whole of London; which

The mortality in the three sub.districts was as under :—
North 2083
South 23.48
East 20.36
It will be noticed that the South district is in the unenviable
position of having the highest mortality. This is accounted for by

and Bethnal Green Road, contains three unhealthy areas which are
veritable plague spots, and handicap all our attempts to reduce the
general death rate of an otherwise fairly healthy parish. In one
