REPORT.
Gentlemen,
I beg to present herewith my twenty.second annual report
dealing with the vital and mortal statistics of the parish of Bethnal
Green for the year 1897.
The usual tables on the forms settled by the Society of Medical
Officers of Health will be found in the appendix, and also those
specially prepared in accordance with the instructions of the Local
Government Board, and designated K23 (A) and K211 (B)
It will be noticed that the figures in table K.3 (A) do not agree
with those in the remainder of the report. The explanation of the
discrepancy is, that the table is prepared in accordance with the
following directions of the Board :—" The deaths classified in
table K23 (A) and summed up in the horizortal lines of totals are the
whole of those registered as having actually occurred in the several
localities comprised within the district." The other tables take
cognizance only of the deaths of persons actually belonging to
Bethnal Green, no matter where the actual death took place, the
deaths of non.parishioners in public institutions within our boundaries
being carefully excluded.
POPULATION.
The census taken in March, 1896, showed a total population of
129,162 persons living at that time in Bethnal Green. My estimate
to the middle of 1896 was 129,200. As the numbers of births and
deaths have actually decreased during the past twelve months, I do
not think our population can have increased, and therefore consider
that the estimate for 1896 fairly represents the true number in the
middle of 1897, and I have again taken it as the basis of my
calculations for the present report.
The estimated populations of the three registration sub.districts
are shown in the accompanying table. The number of inhabited
houses for 1891 is also given, for purposes of comparison with the
