PUBLIC HEALTH (MEAT) REGULATIONS, 1924.
Much improvement is reported, and the number of persons who knowingly evade
the Regulations is now negligible.
The market carriers know the Regulations and the advantage of maintaining their
vehicles in clean and proper condition.
They are always pleased and willing to put right any unsatisfactory condition brought
to their notice which they have overlooked.
The market porters generally also carry out the Regulations, although some of the
pitchers appear to resent the enforcement of the wearing of washable head-coverings.
The number of private cars used for the conveyance of meat appears to be increasing,
but the owners are willing to take such precautions as are reasonably necessary to avoid
contamination when using this class of vehicle for the transport of meat. Many of them
have fitted an adjustable boxed inner lining, which is easily detached and cleansed. I have,
therefore, no reason to stop this practice.
During the year 1937 no prosecutions were taken, the 446 contraventions recorded
being of a minor character, and the forwarding of cautionary letters, where necessary,
has produced the desired improvement.
Butchers' shops and depots used as distribution centres by multiple restaurants are
the subject of constant supervision, and whilst the standard of cleanliness in these premises
is generally good, many improvements have been made.
The premises used for the manufacture of sausages and meat products within the City
are conducted in a satisfactory manner, and the installation of modern machinery and
fittings shows a genuine effort to produce these foods in as hygienic and cleanly a manner
as possible.
The general improvements noted during the past year are the result of co-operation
between the meat traders and transporters and the officers of mv deDartment.
