ALDGATE MARKET AND SLAUGHTERHOUSES.
The record of work performed by the Inspectors at the Aldgate Slaughterhouses
shows the justification of their appointment.
No doubt the increase in the number of animals slaughtered at Aldgate accounts
for an increase in the quantity of unsound food destroyed, but it is difficult to believe
that the difference in the figures for the year 1910 and the year 1913 is accounted for
by that factor alone ; for example, during 1910, 6 carcases of beef were destroyed as
unfit for human food, 45 during the year 1911, 131 during the year 1912, and during
the year under discussion 164.
Bye-law No. 19 provides that "Every occupier of a slaughterhouse who shall
intend to slaughter any animal in such slaughterhouse, or to cause or to permit any
animal to be slaughtered therein, at any time other than between the hours of seven
o'clock in the forenoon and three o'clock in the afternoon on a Sunday, or between the
hours of six o'clock in the forenoon and nine o'clock in the afternoon on any other day,
shall give to the Corporation at least three hours' notice in writing of such intention,
which shall be delivered or sent to their Veterinary Inspector at his office.
