FEEDING OF INFANTS.
During the year 1907, 268 births were registered, 39 of which took place
in public institutions, the parents being non-resident in the City. These cases
have been notified to the Medical Officer of Health of the district to which
they belong.
In all cases where the notification of a birth is received and the parents
reside in the City, the home is visited and the mother advised as to the care
and feeding of the infant. Special attention is paid to the sanitary condition
of the house, and notes taken as to the number of rooms occupied by the
family, the number of persons living and sleeping in those rooms, whether
the child sleeps with the parent or in a cot, and whether the mother goes out
to work.
Any sanitary defects found are handed over to the District Inspector to be
dealt with.
During the year 39 defects have been discovered, chiefly relating to defective
sanitary arrangements, dirty walls and ceilings (in several cases verminous),
and overcrowding.
The total number of visits paid during the year was 657.
