DAIRIES, COWSHEDS AND MILKSHOPS.
The Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops Order of 1885 was issued by the
Privy Council in pursuance of the 34th Section of the Contagious Disease
(Animals) Act, 1878. In 1886 an Amending Act was passed (The
Contagious Disease (Animals) Act, 1886), transferring the powers under this
Section from the Privy Council to the Local Government Board, and an
Amending Order was issued by that Board (The Dairies, Cowsheds and
Milkshops Amending Order, 1886), substituting the Board for the Privy
Council in the provisions of the Order of 1885, and remedying certain
omissions in regard to penalties. In a further Order, viz., the Dairies,
Cowsheds and Milkshops Order of 1899, provision was made for the
examination of cows for tuberculosis by a veterinary surgeon.
The effect of these Orders was to require every local authority to keep a
register of every purveyor of milk, dairyman, or cowkeeper in their district,
to supervise the milk trade, and to carry out certain general regulations
prescribed in the Orders.
