Infection of food was confirmed in five of the fourteen outbreaks which originated
as follows
6 in private canteens.
5 in the homes of families.
3 in the school meals and Londoners' Meals Service.
The most serious occurrence was in the nature of a triple outbreak, in May (80
persons), June (29 persons) and December (104 persons), at the private canteen of a
printing firm in Southwark. Food infection was confirmed on the first occasion when
the lay-out of the canteen was considered unsatisfactory. Metallic dust from the
factory was found to have penetrated the canteen, and it is thought not unlikely
that all three outbreaks may have been due to mild metallic posioning. The last
outbreak in December occurred before improvements recommended as a result of
the first occurrence had been effected.
