Eamination
of samples
In addition to the work entailed by the examination of these samples the services
of the branch have been freely utilised by other departments in an advisory or consultative
capacity. The time occupied in this manner has increased very much in the
last few years, particularly in the year under review, and it shows that the usefulness
of the science of chemistry in the various ramifications of the local government
service is being increasingly appreciated. Examples of particular instances in which
advice has been sought during the year 1937 are : (a) inspection of the premises and
plant of a degreasing firm after a serious explosion had occurred, with a view to
ascertaining the probable cause, (b) visits and advice as to the installation of a methyl
chloride operated air conditioning plant at a restaurant, (c) investigations into the
efficiency of the ventilation plants of certain theatres, halls and cinemas.
The following table shows the results of the analyses of paints, colours and Paints stains :—
Satisfactory | 861 |
Not complying with the specification | 42 |
Not suitable for the Council's requirements | 40 |
Unsatisfactory | 7 |
Observations on the effect of the London atmosphere on paint films of different
composition have been made during the last four years, and information has been
obtained which will prove valuable in assessing the suitability of paints submitted
for use in the Council's service.
