In addition, there were 5 deaths recorded by the Registrar.General of cases
belonging to London which had not been notified within the county. Two of these
were inmates of mental institutions.
During the period 29th October, 1937, to 31st December, 1937, when there was
an outbreak of typhoid fever in Croydon, Surrey, 32 cases of enteric fever and 12
cases of paratyphoid fever were notified in London. One of these only was connected
with the Croydon outbreak, i.e., a person whose permanent address was in
Croydon, but who was notified as suffering from typhoid fever while staying temporarily
in London.
Another case (that of a nurse who, it was reported, had been engaged in nursing
typhoid patients at a hospital in Croydon) was subsequently notified on 21st January,
1938, as suffering from enteric fever while living in London.
Influenza
The deaths from influenza during 1937 numbered 1,656, compared with 533
in 1936.
Influenza became epidemic in London towards the end of 1936, the maximum
weekly deaths, numbering 344, being recorded in the second week of 1937. During
the seven major weeks of prevalence the deaths numbered 1,361. In the corresponding
phase of the previous epidemic, early in 1933, there were 1,802 deaths.
Rheumatic
fever
The deaths in London from rheumatic fever in 1937 numbered 82, of which
42 were among children under 15 years of age. The corresponding figures in 1936
were 106 and 51, respectively.
Cancer
There were 7,320 deaths from cancer in 1937, as against 7,362 in 1936. The
death.rate per thousand was 1.79. There was a decrease of 64 in the deaths among
males and an increase of 22 among females compared with the previous year.
Tuberculosis
The deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis in London during 1937 numbered
2,888, giving a death rate of .71 per thousand living, the corresponding figures for
1936 being 2,849 and .69 respectively, and 2,847 and .68 for 1935. There were
351 deaths from other forms of tuberculosis in 1937 as against 363 in 1936 and 359
in 1935, the death rates being .09 for each year.
The annual death rates from pulmonary and non.pulmonary tuberculosis in
recent years are shown in the subjoined table :–
