Nursery schools and nursery classes
The nursery schools provided and aided by the Council now number twenty-two.
The medical oversight of the schools is carried out by Dr. E. M. McVail.
During the year alterations have been made in some of the nursery schools
maintained by the Council.
An extension of Old Church Road nursery school, providing 80 places, and bringing
the total to 200 places, was opened on 1st September, 1937. Plans have been
passed for two new nursery schools, one at Kintore-street in Bermondsey, and the
other on the new building estate at Honor Oak in Lewisham. Each school is planned
for 120 places.
Certain playrooms at the Rachel McMillan nursery school, Greenwich, were
found to provide less than the desired minimum of 15 square feet per child, and, in
consequence, the nominal accommodation of the school was reduced from 260 to
243 places. Rebuilding of two of the playrooms is, however, now in process, and
when this has been completed the total number of places in the school will be 255.
Four additional voluntary nursery schools, with a total of 180 places, were
recognised during the year, 1937, viz., Kensal House, North Kensington ; St. Agnes
Place, Kennington ; the Sherborne, Kentish Town; and Balham nursery school,
Endlesham-Road, Balham.
