The number of London school children dealt with, under the direction of Dr.
J. R. Rees, at the Institute of Medical Psychology (Tavistock clinic) during the year
was 75, of whom 47 were boys and 28 girls. The age distribution was : 4 to 6
years, 11 ; 7 to 9 years, 27 ; 10 to 13 years, 29 ; 14 years and over, 8.
The sources of reference were : care committees, 16 ; parents and friends, 15 ;
head teachers, 10 ; hospitals and clinics, 10 ; medical officers of health, 10 ; general
practitioners, 9; children's special workers, 3 ; welfare workers, 2. The reasons
for reference were : behaviour difficulties, 17 ; fears, 17 ; backwardness, 9 ; stealing,
lying and truancy, 9 ; enuresis, 7 ; sex difficulties, 5 ; speech difficulties, 3 ; depressive
state, 3 ; nail biting, 2 ; endocrine disorder, 1 ; habit spasm, 1 ; lack of concentration,
1. The results obtained were : improved, 7 ; some improvement, 3 ;
unsuitable or not co-operative, 17 ; consultations only, 10 ; placement, 1 ; still
under treatment, 37.

Western
child
guidance
clinic
The North-Western child guidance clinic is situated at Sheldon Lodge, Cricklewood,
and is able to deal with difficult cases which arise in the Hampstead and
northern districts of London. The work is under the direction of Dr. W. Paterson
Brown. During the year the number of school children dealt with was 11, of whom
8 were boys and 3 girls. The age distribution was : 4 to 8 years, 6 ; 9 to 15 years, 5.
The sources of reference were : care committees, 6 ; head teachers, 4 ; welfare
clinic, 1. The reasons for reference were : unmanageable, 2 ; backwardness, 2 ;
enuresis, 2 ; uncontrollable and violent, 1 ; petty theft, 1 ; desire for independence
and freedom, 1 ; loss of weight, 1 ; excitability, 1. The results obtained were :
satisfactorily adjusted, 4 ; partially adjusted, 2 ; still under treatment, 5.
West End
hospital for
nervous
diseases
The work at the West End hospital for nervous diseases, 73, Welbeck-street,
W.l, under the direction of Dr. Emanuel Miller, has continued during the year.
The number of Council school children dealt with was 41, of whom 26 were boys and
15 girls. The age distribution was : 5 to 8 years, 12 ; 9 to 11 years, 14 ; 12 to 14
years, 14 ; over 14 years, 1.
The sources of reference were : other departments of West End hospital, 21 ;
care committees, 10 ; school doctors, 3 ; other hospitals, 3 ; parents, 2 ; Invalid
Children's Aid Association, 1; head teacher, 1. The reasons for reference were :
tics and jerky movements, 9 ; backwardness, 6 ; unmanageable, 5 ; enuresis, 4 ;
intelligence tests, 4 ; stealing, 3 ; anxieties, 3 ; hysterical ailments, 2 ; truanting, 1 ;
obsessional behaviour, 1 ; sleepwalking, 1; insomnia, 1 ; speech defect, 1. The
results obtained (including children still under treatment at commencement of year)
were : adjusted, 12 ; improved, 7 ; unadjusted, 3 ; unsuitable, 3 ; parents refused
to co-operate, 8 ; transferred to other institutions, 2 ; left district, 2 ; consultations
only, 10 ; still under treatment, 35.
Summary
During the year, 959 London school children, of whom 606 were boys and 353
girls, were dealt with at the above-mentioned clinics, with the exception of Guy's
hospital clinic, the work of which is set out in a different form. The following statement
