It will be seen from the above table that the birth-rates of the several sanitary districts vary
greatly, ranging from 12.9 in the City of London to 25.8 in Bethnal Green, when the rates for the
year 1910 based on the number of married females of child-bearing age, are compared.
Compared with the birth-rate in 1870-2, the London birth-rate of 1910 has decreased by
28 per cent. when calculated on the total population, and 31 per cent. when calculated on the female
population aged 15-45 years; the legitimate birth-rate has declined 26 per cent. when calculated on
the married female population aged 15-45 years, and the illegitimate birth-rate has declined 45 per
cent. when calculated on the unmarried and widowed female population of that age period.
Notitfication
of births.
Under the Notification of Births Act, 1907, the London County Council receives particulars of the births which have been notified to the medical officers of health of the several sanitary districts in London, and from the information thus received the following table has been prepared:—
