Deaths from Tuberculosis.
The deaths from all forms of tuberculosis during the year were 272; of these 211 were
from pulmonary and 61 from other forms of tuberculosis. These figures are equal to a death
rate of 1.27 (0.98 pulmonary, 0.28 non-pulmonary) per 1,000 of population.
In the following table these deaths are classified as regards age and sex:—

In the preceding table it will be observed that deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis were
most numerous at the age periods 25 to 55 years, no less than 146 deaths occuring between
these ages out of a total of 211 at all ages. It is thus seen what a large proportion of these
deaths occur at the most usef ul period of life, when men and women are most efficient and most
valuable to the community. It is also at the period when so many have incurred the responsibility
of families, and these are not only exposed to infection, but in addition, owing to the chronic
nature of the illness, are so often ultimately left unprovided for.
Although the loss of life from tuberculosis is still great, various remedial measures have
effected a material reduction in the mortality during recent years, the figures for 1923, both as
regards notification rate and death rate, being the lowest hitherto recorded in the Borough.
In the following table the notification rates and death rates are classified according to
sex:—
