POPULATION.
In the Report of the Metropolitan Asylums Board for 1899 the population
of St. Pancras was estimated at 244,548. In the medical papers in 1900 the
population was estimated at 245,651. It is possible that these figures may have
been inspired from the Registrar-General's office, as when the death-rates in the
Quarterly Returns of the Registrar-General for 1900 are re-calculated into the
number of deaths, they produce a population of 245,000. It will be safer to regard
the population not as increasing but stationary at 240,764, the enumerated
population of 1896. The figures of the 1896 Census have been taken as a
basis, and the 2312 inmates of Extra-Parochial Institutions have been added
to the Sub-Districts in proportion to the population as the deaths amongst these
inmates are included in the Statistics of the Year.
