of the roads were undertaken by the County Council in accordance
with the agreement referred to in last year's Report (page 53,
par. 76). These works have been completed, with the exception
of two small widenings, one of which the Borough Council agreed
should stand over for the present. In the other case, negotiations
are in progress for the acquisition of property required.
Cedars Road,
&c., Tramways.
68. The work of laying the tramways from Lavender Hill
and Queen's Road, via Cedars Road, Clapham
Common, North Side, and Long Road, to Clapham
Common, South Side, referred to in last year's Report (pp. 54, 55,
pars. 78-80), has been completed. The lines, which were constructed
for the underground conduit system of electric traction,
were inspected by the Board of Trade, and were opened for traffic
in February last. The conditions contained in the agreement
entered into by the London County Council and the Borough
Council in August, 1906, have been complied with. In view of its
heavy financial commitments, the Borough Council did not see its
way at the present time to woodpave the part of the carriageway
in Cedars Road and Clapham Common, North Side, outside the
tramway area. An arrangement was, however, made for the
tramway tracks and margins to be paved with wood when the
tramways were laid, except in the part of Cedars Road where the
gradient is too steep for this description of paving, the Borough
Council undertaking to lay woodpaving in the remainder of the
carriageway of the roads in question within a period of two years.
Streatham
High Road.
69. The agreement between the Borough Council and the
London County Council with regard to the extension
of the tramways along Streatham High Road
to the County boundary at Norbury, referred to in last year's
Report (page 55, par. 81), provided, inter alia, for the widening to
60 feet of the part of Streatham High Road adjoining Sunnyhill
Road. A favourable opportunity having Occurred during the past
year, the property required for a portion of this improvement was
acquired, the old buildings removed, and the road widened. In
connection with this scheme the narrow entrance to Sunnyhill
Road, from Streatham High Road, was made of the full width of
40 feet. The London County Council is bearing two-thirds, and
the Borough Council one-third of the cost of the Streatham High
Road improvement. The whole of the expense of the widening of
Sunnyhill Road will be defrayed by the Borough Council.
